New York possesses a treasure trove of building stones -in lobbies, on facades, sidewalks and curbstone. Water plays an important role in the formation of many of them. The beautiful building materials used in its streets, building facades and lobbies show the richness and variety of colors of these pages of earth history. On our trip we will see many rock type varieties from North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Africa ranging in age fro 3 billion years to a mere 1 million years old. And we will decipher the history that each rock tells.

Tour guide Sidney Horenstein is a geologist and environmental educator emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History. He is co-author of Concrete Jungle, (University of California Press) a book about New York City and our last, best hope to achieve a sustainable future.
