With geologist Sidney Horenstein
New York possesses a treasure trove of building stones -in lobbies, on facades, sidewalks and curbstone. The beautiful building materials used in its streets, building facades and lobbies show the richness and variety of colors of these pages of earth history. On our trip we will see many varieties of rock type from North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Africa ranging in age fro 3 billion years to a mere 1 million years old. And we will decipher the history that each rock tells. Water plays an important role in the formation of many of them.
Sidney Horenstein is a geologist and environmental educator emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History. He is co-author of recently published Concrete Jungle, Univ Cal Press. Its about New York City and our last best hope for a sustainable future.
