Compost Workshop

Sunday August 10 at 9 a.m.
Governors Island

NYC H2O is delighted to partner with Earth Matter for an opportunity to learn about NYC’s compost. The city produces 3.2 million tons of garbage every year – enough to fill Yankee stadium 3 times over from top to bottom. At least 1/3 of it can be composted saving the city a lot of money instead of shipping it to a landfill. Last year the city began a municipal compost program in which compost is picked up by DSNY at farmers markets. Some of the compost is processed at facilities in the five boroughs like Earth Matter.

Come learn how compost gets processed first hand. In addition to being informed about the process participants will help create compost by shoveling food scraps and mixing them with with equal amounts of “browns” (wood chips, dry leaves etc.) using pitch forks, rakes and teamwork. You will be amazed at how your hard work will pay off.
This is a family friendly event.
